(a) The st ructure m ust be abl e t o support limit l oads wi thout det rimental or perm anent deformation. At an y lo ad u p to lim it lo ads, th e deformation may not interfere with safe operation.
(b) The st ructure m ust be abl e t o support ultimate loads without failure. This must be shown by:
(1) Applying ultimate lo ads to th e structure in a static test for at least 3 seconds; or
(2) Dynamic tests sim ulating actu al load application.
