(a) Electrical equipment, controls, and wiring must be i nstalled so t hat operation of any one unit or system o f u nits will n ot adversely affect the simultaneous operation of any other electrical unit or system essential to safe operation.
(b) Cables must be grouped, rout ed, and spaced so that dam age to essential circuits will be minimised if there are fa ults in h eavy cu rrent-carrying cables.
(c) Storage batteries must be desi gned and installed as follows:
(1) Safe cell temperatures and pressures must be m aintained duri ng any probabl e charging and di scharging condi tion. No uncontrolled increase in cell tem perature m ay result when the battery is recharged (after previous complete discharge):
(i) At maximum regulated voltage or power;
(ii) During a fl ight of maximum duration; and
(iii) Under the m ost ad verse cooling condition likely in service.
(2) Compliance wi th sub-paragraph (c)(1) must be shown by test unless experience with sim ilar b atteries an d in stallations has shown that m aintaining safe cell tem peratures and pressures presents no problem.
(3) No ex plosive o r to xic g ases emitted by any battery in norm al operat ion, or as t he result of any probabl e malfunction in the charging sy stem or bat tery i nstallation, m ay accumulate in hazardous quantities within the rotorcraft.
(4) No corrosive fluids or gases that may escape from the battery m ay dam age surrounding structures or adjacent essential equipment.
(5) Each nickel cadm ium battery installation capable of being u sed to start an engine o r au xiliary p ower u nit m ust have provisions to prevent any hazardous effect on structure or essential system s that m ay be caused by t he m aximum am ount of heat the battery can generate duri ng a short ci rcuit of t he battery or of its individual cells.
(6) Nickel cad mium b attery in stallations capable of bei ng used t o st art an engine or auxiliary power unit must have:
(i) A sy stem to control the charging rate of the battery automatically so as to prevent battery overheating;
(ii) A b attery tem perature sensing and over-temperature warni ng sy stem wi th a means for di sconnecting the battery from its charging source in the event of an over-temperature condition; or
(iii) A b attery failu re sen sing an d warning system with a means for disconnecting the battery from its charging source in the event of battery failure.
